Python® – a new generation of subsea wellhead
We are delighted to launch the Plexus Python® subsea wellhead system at Offshore Europe 2015, adding to our already successful surface and jack up wellhead products.
A Joint Industry Project (JIP) was initiated by Shell in 2011 to develop and test a new class of subsea wellhead system. The JIP's objective was to build, test and commercialise a new system, based on Plexus' patented POS-GRIP® friction-grip technology, to address key technical issues and challenges highlighted by regulators following the Gulf of Mexico incident in April 2010. The JIP team also developed the performance verification requirements for the system, which are significantly tougher than basic API standards used by conventional systems.
Python uses our “HG” Sealing technology for rigid metal-to-metal annular seals designed to match the standard of premium casing couplings. A future development of this system will be to include subsea annulus access capability to address sustained casing pressure situations, together with diagnostic and remedial capability. The inclusion of these key features and capabilities in a subsea wellhead will be an industry first.
The benefits of the system include unprecedented levels of qualification testing, leading to high integrity even for 20ksi applications. Installation methods have been optimised, leading to time savings of several days per well in reduced trip times compared to conventional technology.
Launch confirmed for 11.00am on Tuesday 8th September at SPE Offshore Europe – with Ben van Bilderbeek, CEO of Plexus Holdings plc and Fergus Ewing MSP, Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism.
